After Women in Architecture UK’s London Festival of Architecture event, Belonging, Equity and the Future of Inclusion, I think there is another layer to this conversation.

One of the most interesting conversations I had at UKREiiF didn’t happen during the fishbowl discussion of the WIA+WIP panel discussion: Saying the Wrong Thing. It happened afterwards….

We all have capabilities. Skills we’ve developed, tasks we can handle, gaps we’ve stepped into because no one else would. But that doesn’t always mean we’re working from our strengths.

The way we imagine our future self — vividly or vaguely, confidently or fearfully — affects motivation and action.

The structure of many reviews reinforces the idea that progress only counts if it looks like promotion, expanded scope, or visible stretch. What’s often missing is permission to embed, deepen, and pause.

You’ve done more than enough this year. You’ve grown. You’ve endured. You’ve evolved. That deserves recognition!

Most architects invest heavily in their skills but far less in the relationships that shape their opportunities.

There’s a quiet kind of endurance many architects develop — the ability to keep going long after the tank is empty.

We don’t always like to think about leaving. Especially when a job feels stable, or when we’ve put so much of ourselves into it. But every role has a lifespan. And not having an exit strategy can leave you stuck, blindsided, or burnt out.
