Sexism in architecture: ‘no offence intended’ is no defence

Three reasons I felt compelled to write this article for the AJ:

👉 Voices are (still) being minimised. Too often, when a person describes the impact of discriminatory behaviour, their concerns are brushed aside, down-played, or met with defensive push-back.

👉 I’ve just experienced it first-hand. A few weeks ago I told someone their message had offended me. They doubled down – “Your reaction isn’t my problem.” I was left feeling unheard and disrespected.

👉 This conversation matters right now. Next week Women in Architecture will speak at LFA on workplace discrimination. I’ll be there with my fellow committee members - the panel is ace and the discussion should be great.

With intent vs impact so firmly on my mind, I wrote this article to explain why recognising the difference is critical - for every individual and every organisation.
